(Yahoo!) - Legendary crooner Tony Bennett has recruited Bono as the latest celebrity to join his Voices Against Violence campaign. The campaign, which was initiated by Bennett and his son Danny, advocates for common-sense gun laws and encourages people to raise their voices and tell their elected officials that "enough is enough" when it comes to gun violence.

The U2 frontman and outspoken human rights advocate joins a host of renowned artists who support the campaign, including Paul McCartney, Elton John, Snoop Lion, Sting, k.d. lang, Juanes and Josh Groban.

"With over 5,000 deaths attributed to gun violence in just the six months since the terrible Newtown massacre, I am truly appreciative that Bono has lent his voice to our efforts – he is an extraordinary humanitarian," Bennett said in a statement.

The Voices Against Violence website prompts people to text "My Voice" to 877877 or call 1-888-997-3976 to encourage their Senators to take action. Those who call the number will hear a recording from Bono thanking them for raising their voices before they're connected to a member of Congress. "Tell them you support common sense laws that keep guns out of the wrong hands, including criminal background checks on all gun sales," Bono says, adding, "Don't be nervous. Remember they work for you."

Recent polls cited by President Obama found that nine out of 10 Americans support stricter background checks for gun owners, and Voices Against Violence is encouraging such people to make their opinions known to lawmakers who can create legislation to affect real change.

As it happens, this isn't the first time Bono and Bennett have collaborated. The Irish singer joined Bennett on his 2006 album Duets on the tune "I Wanna Be Around."
